Musk late Friday shared a video that showed migrants and aid workers on a boat. The right-wing account that first put the content on X, formerly known as Twitter, praised the populist far-right Alternative for Germany party. “Is the German public aware of this?” Musk wrote in his repost. The German Federal Foreign Office replied to Musk directly, writing: “Yes. And it’s called saving lives.” Musk responded that he thinks the German-operated ships violated Italy’s sovereignty by bringing rescued migrants to Italian territory.
The Flying Scotsman locomotive collided with another train in Scotland. Several people were injured
LONDON (AP) — Several people have been injured after the Flying Scotsman steam locomotive was involved in a low-speed crash with another heritage train in the Scottish Highlands. The National Railway Museum said Saturday the “shunting incident” took place at Aviemore Station in the Cairngorms national park on Friday. The station is home to a heritage train line that takes visitors on steam train rides in northern Scotland. Emergency workers were alerted Friday “to reports of a collision” involving two trains at Aviemore. Two people were hospitalized as a precaution. Three others were treated at the scene. The Belmond and Strathspey Railway said the Flying Scotsman locomotive was being coupled with stationary Royal Scotsman train carriages when the collision took place.
Group of homeless people sues Portland, Oregon, over new daytime camping ban
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A group of homeless people in Portland, Oregon, has filed a class action lawsuit challenging new restrictions the city placed on daytime camping in an attempt to address safety issues stemming from a crisis of people living on the streets. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the lawsuit filed Friday in Multnomah County Circuit Court alleges the restrictions violate Oregon law and the state constitution because they subject people who are involuntarily without permanent shelter to unreasonable punishments for unavoidable activities including sleeping and staying dry. A spokesperson for Mayor Ted Wheeler declined to comment to the newspaper on the lawsuit but said the city plans to start enforcing the ordinance in the coming weeks.
‘Toy Story’ meets the NFL: Sunday’s Falcons-Jaguars game to feature alternate presentation for kids
Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the “Toy Story” universe will be taking in an NFL game for the first time. Sunday’s game between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars not only will be taking place from London’s Wembley Stadium, it will be contested inside of Andy’s room as part of an alternate broadcast. The “Toy Story Funday Football” broadcast will be streamed on ESPN+ and Disney+. ESPN+ also has the main broadcast. This is the second time this year ESPN has done an animated alternate broadcast using Disney characters. In March, it aired the “NHL Big City Greens Classic” during a game between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have fired manager Gabe Kapler. It’s the first managerial change of 2023, and it comes with three days left in the season and the Giants eliminated from the playoffs. San Francisco is 78-81 going into a season-ending series against the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The 48-year-old Kapler had a 295-248 record over four seasons guiding the Giants, but his only year with a winning record was 2021. San Francisco won a franchise-record 107 games that year and the NL West title, but lost in the NL Division Series to the Dodgers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s soaring popularity was even more evident when it came to jersey sales. Ohtani had the best-selling jersey in Major League Baseball this season. It’s the first time a Japanese player finished in the top spot. The league and the Players Association released its top-20 list with rankings based on sales of Nike jerseys since Opening Day on MLBShop.com. The Los Angeles Angels’ two-way star beat out Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr., Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees, San Diego’s Fernando Tatis Jr. and Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Disney Plus announces crackdown on password sharing in Canada
NEW YORK (AP) — Password-sharing crackdowns are becoming more and more common in the streaming world today. And Disney Plus is following suit. In an email sent to users in Canada, Disney announced upcoming restrictions on Canadian subscribers’ ability to share login credentials outside of their household — set to go into effect for most Canadian users on Nov. 1. It’s unclear when or if similar household restructions could be seen beyond Canada. But in a recent earnings call, Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger vowed to make the company’s streaming service more profitable and alluded to wider password crackdown efforts through next year.
Powerball jackpot nears $1 billion after long drought of winners
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Another Powerball drawing, another chance at a jackpot that is inching toward a billion dollars. The estimated $960 million prize up for grabs Saturday night is the world’s ninth-largest lottery jackpot. That’s behind earlier Powerball and Mega Millions prizes that all topped a billion dollars. The prize has grown so large because there have been 30 consecutive drawings without a big winner. That streak is due to the game’s long odds. The $960 million prize is for a sole winner who chooses an annuity with annual payments over 30 years. Winners almost always take the cash option. For Saturday’s drawing, that would be over $441 million.
A second man is arrested over the felling in England of a much-loved tree near Hadrian’s Wall
LONDON (AP) — British police have made a second arrest over the “senseless” felling of a 300-year-old tree near the Roman landmark of Hadrian’s Wall in northeastern England. The arrest came hours after a 16-year-old was freed on bail. Northumbria Police said on Friday that a man in his 60s was arrested and is being questioned in custody. The 16-year-old was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of criminal damage after the tree was felled overnight. The tree was one of the main landmarks along Hadrian’s Wall. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site built nearly 2,000 years ago when Britain was part of the Roman Empire to guard its northwestern frontier.
